I. SERMON NOTES

Introduction: Purpose of the Gospel of John

  • This new sermon series explores The Gospel of John to help us understand why Jesus Christ can and must be trusted, so that we may have confident faith in Jesus and enjoy the abundant life He gives.

  • John records selected signs of Jesus (e.g. water into wine – John 2; healing the lame man – John 5) and testimonies of those who believed (e.g. the Samaritan woman – John 4; the man born blind – John 9).

  • John 20:30–31 states John’s purpose: that readers may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing, have life in His name.

Starting with the Right Ending in Mind

  • Life is a journey; to live it fully, we must know our destination.

  • To have confident faith in Jesus, we must begin with the right ending.

  • John wrote his Gospel with this ending clearly in mind (John 20:30–31).

  • The phrase “you may come to believe” can also mean “you may continue to believe”.

    • Thus, John’s Gospel serves both evangelistic and discipling purposes.

  • The desired ending: believing in Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God, resulting in eternal and abundant life.

Three Key Responses for Confident Faith in Jesus

(a) Recognise Jesus as the Source of All Things, Life and Light

(John 1:1–3, 9, 14, 17–18)

  • Jesus is the Word (Logos) who was with God and was God (John 1:1–2).

  • He is not an impersonal principle but God Himself, divine and eternal.

  • All things were created through Him (John 1:3); without Him, nothing exists.

  • In Jesus is life, and this life is the light of all people (John 1:4–5, 9).

  • His life cannot be overcome by darkness; it is spiritually true, life-giving and healing.

  • The Word became flesh and lived among us, as one of us, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).

  • God’s grace and truth are fully revealed in Jesus Christ (John 1:17–18).

  • Jesus makes the unseen God known.

(b) Receive Jesus and Believe in Him

(John 1:12; John 20:31)

  • To “receive Him” and to “believe in His name” mean the same response of trust.

  • Receiving Jesus shows trust in His reality and trustworthiness.

  • Sadly, many still do not recognise or accept Him (John 1:10–11).

  • Yet, to all who receive and believe in Him, He gives the power to become children of God (John 1:12).

  • This results in a fundamental inner transformation and membership in God’s family.

(c) Be a Witness Who Testifies to Jesus

(John 1:7–8, 12)

  • John the Baptist came as a witness to testify to the light, pointing others to Jesus.

  • He was not the light but a signpost to the true Light.

  • Bearing witness is crucial; it can determine whether others have the opportunity to believe and become children of God.

  • Like John the Baptist and others in this Gospel, believers are called to testify to Jesus.

  • We must not fall into the trap of saying, “Let Somebody Else do it.”

  • As we witness, relying on the Holy Spirit, our own faith grows in confidence.

Application for CCMC in 2026

  • Faith that is confident produces work by faith (1 Thessalonians 1:3), especially through Fellowship and Discipleship.

  • CCMC is reaching out to absent members, loved ones who have not been to church for some time, and family members who are still to know Jesus through:

    1. Easter Sunday Combined Service & Lunch – 5 April

    2. Church Camp (JB) – 12–15 June

    3. Family Day & 32nd Anniversary Combined Service & Lunch – 12 & 13 September

  • These efforts are under the tagline “Rejoicing and Reuniting”.

  • A church-wide prayer effort (1 Feb – 30 Jun) to support these works of faith.

Conclusion

To live with confident faith in Jesus, we must keep the right ending in mind, believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God

  • Growing in recognising who Jesus is.

  • Receiving and believing in Him more fully.

  • Witnessing so others may become children of God.

  •

May God increase our confidence in faith and produce works by faith for His glory.

II. REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. To live life and have not just Faith in Jesus but CONFIDENT FAITH IN JESUS, we need to start with the right ending in mind! Share what kind of ending we have been aiming for in our lives and why?

How would living by John 20:30&31, "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of  his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe  that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name." help us be clearer about the ending we should be wanting or aiming for?

2. How are we recognising, in our daily lives, that Jesus is the Source of all things and of life and light (1:1 to 3 & 9), for He is full of grace and truth (1:14, 17 & 18)?

3. Have we opened our heart to receive Jesus and believe in Him (1:12) as the Messiah and the Son of God (20:31)? If so, share our testimony with each other? If not yet, if comfortable, share what questions or doubts we may still have  to be answered or addressed?

For those who have received Jesus and believed in Him for some time already, how are we keeping our faith in Jesus confident? What are some issues/challenges we have faced in doing so and how have we overcome them?

4. We are to be a witness to testify to Jesus (1:7&8) and help others know Jesus, so that they too can become Children of God (1:12)? Who have we been witnessing to, or being a signpost to, in order to introduce Jesus to them? Share how we can be supported in prayer?

5. The Prayer Effort from 1 Feb till 30 Jun is for us to submit in confidence the names of persons we love and care about – whether a member who has been away from church for some time and/or a loved one who is not yet a Christian – and how we would like that person(s) to be prayed for by our Pastors.

May we also pray for them by faith so that they will to attend, when we invite them to, our:

  • (1) Easter Sunday Combined Worship Service followed by our Easter Sunday Lunch on 5 Apr

  • (2) Church Camp from 12 to 15 Jun (Fri to Sun) at JB, and

  • (3) Family Day on 12 Sep (Sat) from 2pm to 5.30pm at MGS and our 32nd Church Anniversary Combined Worship Service & Lunch on 13 Sep (Sun)
