I. SERMON NOTES

Introduction: The Right Ending for Confident Faith
-
The Gospel of John was written so that we may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing, we may have life in His name (John 20:30–31).
-
To grow in increasingly confident faith in Jesus, we must live with this right ending clearly in mind.
-
From John 1:1–18, confident faith grows as we learn:
-
Who Jesus is (Head – knowledge and wisdom),
-
What it means to believe and receive Him (Heart – conviction and trust),
-
How to live and serve as His witnesses (Hands – action and service).
-
-
Faith must move from head, to heart, to hands if it is to grow in confidence.
John Chapter 2
The accounts of the Wedding at Cana in Galilee and the Cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem reveal both the nature of mankind and the nature of God.
I. The Wedding at Cana of Galilee (John 2:1–12)
A. The Nature of Mankind: Needy (and Irresponsible)
-
The wedding couple ran out of wine, exposing poor planning and causing embarrassment.
-
In a small, close-knit community, this failure highlighted human need and irresponsibility.
-
This reflects the wider human condition: all of us, at some point, have been needy or irresponsible.
-
When faced with such need, many turn to luck or good fortune, rather than addressing the deeper issue.
-
The situation shows the need for intervention beyond ourselves - an intervention by Jesus.

B. The Nature of God: Gracious
-
Mary approached Jesus because she knew not only His ability, but His gracious character, confidently telling the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
-
Jesus’ words to His mother, “Woman… My hour has not yet come”, were culturally appropriate and not disrespectful.
-
Jesus remained fully focused on God’s will and purpose, yet He still made time to help those in need.
-
He instructed the servants, and as they obeyed, the water was turned into wine.
-
Jesus did not seek recognition; the groom received the credit, while Jesus quietly revealed God’s glory.
-
Lesson: when helping others, we simply do our part without seeking public recognition, knowing that God sees and rewards.
-
Confident faith produces works of grace, expressed through time, effort, humility, and service.
II. The Cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem (John 2:13–25)
A. The Nature of Mankind: Greedy
-
The Temple, meant for worship of God, had been turned into a marketplace.
-
Merchants and moneychangers exploited worshippers, using religious practice for personal gain.
-
Though justified as a “service”, their actions showed greed, misuse of sacred space, and disrespect for God.
-
Worship was reduced to a transaction, with the approval of religious leaders.
B. The Nature of God: Holy
-
Jesus acted decisively and intervened, driving out merchants and overturning tables, and restoring order to God’s house.
-
His actions were not violent but righteous, motivated by zeal for God’s holiness: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
-
God is holy and must not be trifled with.
-
When questioned about His authority, Jesus pointed to His death and resurrection: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
-
He revealed Himself as the true Temple and the perfect and permanent sacrifice.
-
Some believed because of the signs, while others remained hardened. Jesus knew what was in every heart.

Conclusion: Growing in Confident Faith
From John 2, we learn:
About Mankind
-
We are needy and sometimes irresponsible.
-
We are also greedy and prone to misuse what is sacred.
About God
-
God is gracious, meeting human need.
-
God is holy, deserving reverent worship.
Implications for Disciples Today
In this Season of Lent, as those seeking confident faith in Jesus, we are called to:
-
Live purposefully according to God’s direction and accomplish it responsibly.
-
Graciously give time and energy to help others in need, as Jesus did.
-
Recognise and submit to Jesus’ authority to cleanse our lives of what is unrighteous.
-
Worship God rightly, trusting Jesus as our perfect and permanent sacrifice.
As we do this together in fellowship and discipleship, our faith will deepen and produce works that glorify God, just as Jesus did.

II. REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Discussion Qns for GGs: (share in groups of 3)
1. Read through John 2 slowly and imagine ourselves present at
-
(1) the Wedding in Cana of Galilee, and
-
(2) Cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem.
What sounds, smells, sights, tastes and touches did you experience?
2(a). How might we have been needy (& irresponsible) in our lives where we did not do as we should have (and ourselves or others were affected)?
2(b). How then did we need God to graciously come and help us in our time of need, whether
directly or through another person?
3(a). How might we have been greedy and not shown proper respect for the things of God in our lives?
3(b). How then did we need God to come and “clean us up” so that we might be right with Him
again?
4. In this Season of Lent, to help us increase in Confident Faith in Jesus and have “work produced by faith”, which of the following do you want more and more to have in your life?
-
(a) Live, as Jesus did, for what we are directed by God to, and accomplish it – not irresponsibly!
-
(b) Have the time and energy to graciously help those in need, as Jesus did!
-
(c) Recognise Jesus’ authority to cleanse our lives of all matters that are unrighteous, and not be surprised that He does!
-
(d) Recognise the God we worship is Holy, and truly worship Him rightly as we trust Jesus as our perfect and permanent sacrifice, one for all!
