I. SERMON NOTES

The sermon began by observing that the world today tends to focus on the “here and now” rather than eternal matters. People often prioritise temporary and earthly concerns over things of spiritual and eternal significance. This short-sightedness was clearly illustrated by the crowd in John 6.

After Jesus miraculously fed the five thousand (John 6:1–15), the crowd searched for Him along the Sea of Galilee. Although some recognised Jesus as “the prophet who is to come into the world” (v14), many followed Him simply because they wanted more food. Jesus exposed their true motives in verse 26:

“Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.”

This reflected humanity’s tendency to live for immediate gratification rather than eternal purposes. Before trusting Christ, and sometimes even afterwards, people often live by sight rather than by faith, pursuing temporary satisfaction while neglecting spiritual realities.

Jesus then declared in verse 27:

“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.”

From this, two truths were highlighted:

  1. What matters most is that which “endures for eternal life”, not things that perish.

  2. Eternal life is received as a gift from the Son of Man, the One approved and sent by God.

However, the crowd misunderstood Jesus and asked:

“What must we do to perform the works of God?” (v28)

This question revealed their self-righteousness. They believed they could please God through their own efforts and merit. Jesus corrected them in verse 29:

“This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

This emphasised that the life pleasing to God is one of faith in Jesus. Salvation is not achieved through human effort, pride, or religious performance, but through trusting in Christ alone.

Despite witnessing miracles, the crowd still demanded more signs. They referred to Moses and the manna in the wilderness, saying:

“He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” (v31)

This explained that the crowd wrongly glorified Moses instead of God. Jesus corrected them firmly:

“It was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.” (vv32–33)

God alone was the true provider. The “true bread from heaven” is that which gives life to the world.

Even then, the crowd remained spiritually blind and materialistic, asking Jesus:

“Sir, give us this bread always.” (v34)

Jesus then made the first of His seven “I am” statements:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (v35)

Jesus was declaring Himself to be the answer to the deepest needs of the human heart. Whoever truly comes to Him in faith will never spiritually hunger or thirst again because Jesus fully satisfies.

An illustration from the film Ratatouille was used, where Colette describes how truly good bread can be recognised even by the sound of its crust. However he stressed that Jesus is “the BEST BREAD ever”.

Bread was a staple food in the Middle East and essential for daily life. Likewise, Jesus is essential for spiritual life and well-being. The preacher contextualised this for Singapore by referring to rice, noodles, prata, pasta, potatoes, and naan as staple foods people depend on daily. In the same way, believers must depend fully on Christ.

Jesus further explained in verses 37–40 that all who come to Him will be fully secure in Him:

“Anyone who comes to me I will never drive away.” (v37)

Jesus promised never to reject, abandon, or lose those who belong to Him. This was described as Jesus’ “keeping ministry”, carried out in obedience to the will of the Father. Noted that the “will of God” is mentioned three times in verses 38–40, highlighting that salvation is entirely God’s gracious work.

An illustration was drawn from Rick Astley’s song Never Gonna Give You Up to describe Christ’s faithfulness:

“Never gonna give you up

Never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry

Never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you”

Jesus will never give up on those who place their faith in Him, and He will raise them up on the last day to eternal life.

The sermon concluded with two key applications:

  1. Do not focus on temporary and worldly matters, but on spiritual and eternal realities. Be spiritually minded.

  2. Place your faith and trust in Jesus, the Bread of Life, for only He can truly satisfy, save, and secure us eternally.

As believers trust in Christ together, they will grow in confident faith in Jesus as His disciples. Alleluia! Amen!

II. REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. “We live in a world that tends to focus on the “here and now” or the “immediate”, rather than the “there and later” or the “future”. That is, we live in a world that focuses on temporal and temporary importance, things lacking meaning or significance, rather than matters of spiritual and eternal importance, meaning, or significance. This is because of short-sightedness; short-term and temporal thinking on the part of man”.

In groups of 4 or 5, share:

- What is your response to the above statements? Share your reasons for your response,

2. Jesus stated, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” (v27). Here, Jesus revealed, firstly, that what is most important in life is a focus on that which “endures for eternal life”, and not that which perishes, that which has no spiritual lasting value, and secondly, that which “endures for eternal life” must be received as a “gift” from the Messiah, “the Son of Man”, who has been sealed (approved) by God!

In groups of 3, share:

- What are you really living for? - Have you received the gift of eternal life from Jesus (cf v29)? If not yet, share why as far as you are comfortable. If yes, share what it means to you.

3. Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (v35).

In groups of 4 or 5, share:

- Your experience of having Jesus as your “Bread of Life” – the one who is “the only permanent satisfaction for the human desire for life”.

- Who could/should you share Jesus as the “Bread of Life” with? Remember to pray for the persons mentioned at the end of the GG meeting.

4. Read out loud as a group vv37 to 40, “Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the 4 last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the 11 Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.”

- Besides finding true satisfaction in Jesus (v35), a person who has faith in Jesus will also know and have full security in God’s Kingdom and Family. Share in groups of 4 to 5 (or even as a whole group if possible), who these truths help you to increase in Confident Faith in Jesus!
