I. SERMON NOTES

Introduction

Following Jesus and keeping our faith steady is not merely about the services we attend or the verses we can quote; it is about the constant, quiet work of checking whether our hearts are aligned with the Father's heart.

Spiritual drift happens slowly, much like a car's wheel alignment shifting by a fraction on the BKE. If you loosen your grip, the car pulls slightly to one side. A short drive hides the flaw, but driving a long distance wears down the tyres. Most people do not suddenly abandon God overnight; the drift away from intimacy, conviction, and serving happens gradually.

In John 8:12, Jesus steps into the middle of our drift and declares, "I am the light of the world." This light reveals and redirects and connects perfectly with CCMC’s vision to know God deeply and make Him known widely, because we cannot make Him known widely unless we first know Him deeply.

1. The Light that Heals what it Reveals

Before Jesus declares that He is the light of the world, He stands in a messy human situation where a woman caught in adultery is dragged before Him. The air is thick with judgment, yet Jesus looks at her with grace, saying, "Neither do I condemn you." Crucially, He adds, "Go and sin no more." (John 8:11b)

"Jesus gave that woman grace, but he also called her toward transformation. 'Neither do I condemn you'—that is grace. 'Go and sin no more'—that is transformation."

Truth without grace becomes cruelty, while avoiding truth out of fear becomes compromise. Jesus holds both perfectly. If you flip on a kitchen light at night and see a mess, you do not switch on the light to shame the kitchen; you switch it on to clean it up. The light of Christ reveals hidden pride, bitterness, and hypocrisy not to embarrass us, but to save us. Only what is exposed can truly be healed. Before we pray, "Lord, send us to the nations," we must first pray, "Lord, search my heart."

Before we carry the light outward we must allow the light inward.  Jesus lovingly calls us back into alignment.  That alignment begins with honesty before him because Jesus is the light that heals what it reveals.

2. The Compass of Abiding

In John 8:31-32, Jesus moves from revealing to recalibrating.  The religious leaders of the day were confident in their spiritual identity, yet they were deeply misaligned. Jesus tells them, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Abiding means to remain, stay, dwell, and continue. Confident faith is built through the daily, disciplined work of abiding through discipleship.  This complements CCMC’s 2026 Theme, Faith in Jesus - Producing Confident Work via Fellowship and Discipleship.  Discipleship is not merely about gaining information, it is about transformation.  It is the alignment work of the soul.

If a ship's compass is off by just one degree, it matters little in the first mile, but after a thousand miles, the ship ends up in an entirely different country. Small compromises in integrity, prayer, or priorities accumulate over time. In our Singaporean culture, we are rewarded for doing rather than remaining, making it difficult to sit still. Yet, we can be physically close to Jesus while remaining spiritually resistant to Him.

Recalibration requires daily self-examination and intentional habits like Scripture, prayer, and growth groups, where we help one another check our spiritual compasses.  Abiding is not passivity, it is relational faithfulness with God and with people.

3. The Overflow of a Saturated Heart

The light was never meant to stay only with us.  The light reveals and heals but the light also sends us.  The issue in John chapter 8 was never a lack of information; it was a lack of response. Knowing Him deeply is only half the journey; we must make Him known widely. When Christ truly becomes the light of your life, you do not have to force yourself to shine—you simply reflect Him.

"Abiding is not an escape from ministry life. It is the source of ministry life."

Think of a sponge soaked completely in water until it is saturated; it does not work hard to get things wet, it simply leaks wherever it goes. A missional life looks like a saturated heart overflowing with the presence of Jesus. Missions is not merely a humanitarian project for social impact; it is driven by a greater kingdom purpose for eternal impact, sharing that freedom from sin is possible.

Spiritual giants like Isaiah, Peter, and Paul encountered the light before they were sent. God is not merely looking for more workers; He is looking for surrendered hearts.

Conclusion

Jesus ends His conversation in John 8:58 with a staggering declaration: "Before Abraham was, I am."

He is not merely a moral guide; He is the great "I AM" who saves, transforms, recalibrates, and sends. Our confidence does not come from our own strength, but from Him.

We must carry the light to our workplaces, families, and neighbours.

May CCMC not merely grow larger in numbers, but brighter in spirit, walking faithfully in the light.

II. REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. In John 8, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world.” What does this reveal about who Jesus is, and why is He alone able to lead people out of darkness and into life?

  2. Jesus says in John 8:31–32 that true disciples abide in His Word. According to this passage, what is the difference between superficial belief and genuine discipleship?

  3. Are there areas of your life that may have slowly drifted out of alignment with the Light of Christ? What might God be lovingly recalibrating in your heart today?

  4. How might God be calling you to make Him known more widely - within your family, workplace, community, or even among the nations?
