MWS FELLOWSHIP ON THE GREENS 2025

The Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) Fellowship on the Greens (FOTG) charity golf tournament is upon us again for the 37th year, happening on Wed, 6 Aug 2025 at Orchid Country Club.

This year, the funds raised will be channelled to fund operations of the new MWS Nursing Home - Eunos. The 171-bed facility provides 24/7 nursing, medical, therapeutic, pastoral and social emotional care for chronically ill and frail from low-income backgrounds who do not have any or poor caregiver support. Our goal is to raise $500,000 for this year specially, donations to MWS Nursing Home – Eunos will be matched twice; by Community Silver Trust dollar for dollar and a private trust which will donate $1.50 for every dollar raised.  This means that every dollar will be multiplied five-fold.

Hear from MWS Nursing Home residents

89-year-old Mdm Ong Soh Tin, perched in a wheelchair within the compound of MWS Nursing Home – Yew Tee (YTNH), is speaking rapidly in Hokkien, her words flowing with brief smiles. Her lively chatter and cheerful demeanour light up the space.  Yet, just a year ago, she was but a shadow of this vibrant self.

After a severe fall left her with a traumatic brain injury and significant cognitive impairments, Mdm Ong was admitted to MWS YTNH. Suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, Mdm Ong became quiet and reserved, her spirits low, and her engagement with others minimal.

However, in November 2023, MWS’ Allied Health team deployed Dexie, a human-like AI robot, to engage a group of residents including Mdm Ong thrice a week. Designed for dementia care, Dexie interacts with residents using cognitive games, exercises, and sing-alongs in multiple languages. Dexie has enabled the Nursing Home to maintain regular and consistent interactions with residents like Mdm Ong, boosting their engagement and well-being. Regular exercises with Dexie also improved Mdm Ong’s physical fitness and strength, enabling her to manage some daily living activities, like eating, on her own.

“Dexie enabled more frequent cognitive and physical rehabilitation, which improved residents’ overall functioning,” said Coryn Ho, an MWS occupational therapist. “For Mdm Ong, this increased engagement turned out to be the missing piece she needed, beyond medical interventions, for her mental recovery.”

87-year-old Mr Zakaria is a widower and had 5 children. However, they are all mentally incapacitated and 2 of them have since passed on while the rest are institutionalised. In 2019, Mr Zakaria was admitted to MWS Nursing Home – Yew Tee (YTNH) after a fall. Unfortunately, his fourth child subsequently also needed more care and upon Mr Zakaria’s request, was transferred to MWS YTNH.

“Having gone through multiple losses, Mr Zakaria is very grieved,” said MWS Chaplain, Chua Chiew Poh, who often visits Mr Zakaria to lend him a listening ear and encourage him when he is feeling down. “But he is also very comforted by the care he and his son receive here.”

“I enjoy the company and activities here. Most of all, I feel assured knowing that both of us are well taken care of,” said Mr Zakaria.  Such engagements have been helpful in Mr Zakaria’s healing journey. “While it has been difficult for him, he seems more at peace now,” observed Chiew Poh. “Despite the trials he experienced, he often counts his blessings and thanks God for His providence.”
